He participated in intensive German language and workplace training courses between 1972 and 1973 in Germany. In 1976, he trained for an internship in the German Railways for 3 months using the IAESTE scholarship. During his undergraduate education at Fırat University, he coded programs using the FORTRAN programming language. He graduated from Fırat University as the top honor student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1977, and he began to pursue his master's degree at the Nuclear Energy Institute, Istanbul Technical University (ITU). He completed his master's thesis on a computer simulation subject using the FORTRAN programming language. He started working at the ITU Research Reactor in 1978 and received his master's degree in 1979. He was appointed as a "Research Assistant" at Fırat University in 1979 and started his doctorate education at the Institute of Sciences, Karadeniz Technical University (KTÜ), in the same year. Between 1981 and 1982, he pursued the experimental work (computer simulation) of his doctoral dissertation in Germany as a DAAD scholar. He brought a SINCLAIR ZX-81 microcomputer in 1982 when he returned to Turkey and held his first BASIC programming courses at Firat University. He was promoted to "Doctor of Philosophy” from KTÜ in 1983. In 1990, he participated in academic studies on Computer Systems at Indiana and Purdue Universities within the scope of the YÖK / World Bank Project. He was promoted to "Associate Professor" in Energy Education in 1991. In 1991, he established the first local university television at Fırat University, and in those years, he gave distance education courses in computer programming and database management systems via this television broadcasting system. In 1992, he did academic studies in computer-aided education and design at Salford and Bradford Universities in England. In 1995, he was invited to Oklahoma State University in the US to work on Vocational and Technical Education and Informatics subjects. In 1997, he was promoted to "Professor" at the Department of Computer Systems Education. Thanks to the German scholarship (DAAD) he participated in a project in the field of Robotics at Bremen University in 1998. Between 1999 and 2002 as a member of the National Informatics Committee, he led distance education studies at various universities in Turkey. Between 2000 and 2009, he served as a commission member of the Vocational and Technical Education of Interuniversity Board. He served as the founding dean of Fırat University Faculty of Communication between 2000 and 2004. He conducted scientific studies and held different lectures at West Virginia University between 2003 and 2005 in the US. He was appointed Vice Rector to Siirt University between 2007 and 2008 to pursue the founding activities. In the same years, he worked as the Dean of the Education Faculty at Siirt University. Between 1998 and 2001, he worked as the Coordinator of Firat University on the Eastern Anatolia Project (EAP). He completed the “Provincial Development Plans Projects” of Elazığ, Bingöl, Muş, Tunceli, Bitlis, and Siirt provinces with a team between 2001 and 2004. Between 1995 and 1998, he organized “Teacher Training Projects in Information Technologies” with the YÖK and the Ministry of National Education. In 2011, he conducted research at Wilkes University in the US. He worked as the Revolving Fund Operations Manager at Fırat University between 2008 and 2012. In 2011, he was promoted to full-time Professor in the Department of Software Engineering, College of Technology at Fırat University. In 2013, he taught an Introduction to Digital Forensics and Information Assurance course for undergraduate students at Sam Houston State University and he held various online lectures at the same university between 2018 and 2019. He founded the Software Engineering International Joint Undergraduate Program (UOLP) at the College of Technology, at Firat University. The students can gain two separate diplomas from Fırat and Sam Houston State Universities who complete the program. This program is most preferred in dual diploma programs in Turkey and the whole quota of this program has been filled since 2018. He established the first and still the only one of the Department of Digital Forensics Engineering, College of Technology at Firat University. Between 2015 and 2017, he completed his second master’s degree in public administration at Sam Houston State University in the United States. He earned a scholarship from the University during his education due to his outstanding success. He founded the Software and Cyber Security Association of Türkiye in 2017 (www.softcybersec.org). Since 2000, he has been a Permanent Member of the Council of Deans of Communication Faculties (www.ildek.org). Since 2013, he has organized the International Symposium on Digital Forensic and Security (www.isdfs.org) every year, taking the support of the IEEE. He published about 400 international and national articles, papers, and books. Between 1997 and 2000, he was a columnist at BT/Haber newspaper and he has been a columnist for Gunisigi Newspaper since 2000 (https://www.gunisigigazetesi.net/profil/11/prof-dr-asaf-varol). He taught different courses in Computer Engineering at Fırat University, West Virginia University, Wilkes University, Sam Houston State University, Maltepe University, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for various years. In 2020, he was promoted to full-time professor in the Department of Computer Engineering (English Program), College of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Maltepe University in Istanbul, Turkey. He has been a full-time professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, since August 2022. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP). He is married and has two children. He speaks English and German at an advanced level. |
